The Best Inventions from the Last 50 Years

The world has changed a lot in the past 50 years thanks to inventors across the globe. From technology to medicine, energy to transportation, innovation has thrived, and it is surely not going to slow down.

The Mighty team has rounded up the best inventions that have totally changed the way we do things day to day. Here is a list of the best inventions over the last 50 years that have shaped the world as we know it today.

The Electric Car

It should first be noted that electric cars have been around in some form or another since 1920, but only recently have they been widely adopted thanks to hybrid vehicles like the Prius and fully electric vehicles like the Tesla. More car companies are now looking into the possibility of electric, and it does not seem like this source of energy will be going anywhere any time soon.

Photovoltaic Solar Energy

While the photovoltaic effect was discovered back in the 1800s, it was not until 1970 that solar energy was taken seriously after the oil embargo and energy crisis. This type of clean energy is now powering homes, production plants, and more thanks to modern solar panels.

The Cell Phone

It had to end up on this list. While the first mobile phone call may have been placed in 1973, the same handheld cell phone was not released to the public until 1983 by Motorola. When it hit the market, the first cell phone cost $4,000 and weighed over 2 pounds. Phones began to shrink in size in 1989, and have only become better since then with the introduction of the first smartphone from Apple in 2007.

Although the first Navistar GPS device was released in 1978, an unscrambled GPS signal was not granted to the public until the year 2000, and now we cannot imagine our lives without it. GPS is in almost every piece of technology a person has with them at any given moment - cell phone, smart watch, and even in your car. Sayonara, tiny boxes on your dashboard! Just ask Siri how to get there and she will take you!

DNA Testing

According to the DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC), the 1980s mark the start of modern science. Not only can they test for biological parents and children with blood, but also with a simple cheek swab or saliva sample. Better yet, since DNA testing became used in the post-conviction process, 375 people have been proven innocent and freed from jail.

3D Printing

While this is still a relatively new field, the impacts of 3D printing will last for years into the future. The manufacturing process has and will be changed dramatically as assembly lines and warehouses decrease, and streamlined and locally created products increase.
